Multidecadal trend analysis of hydrological drought along River Niger using the Streamflow Drought Index

Droughts affect human well-being and the economy of countries across world. Understanding long-term evolution droughts within a particular region will help in drought mitigation adaptation plans, thereby reducing impact on environment. This study examined multidecadal trends hydrological at two stations along River Niger using 3-month, 6-month, annual time scales. Hydrological events were identified streamflow index (SDI) between 1915 1990 based Theil-Sen slope Mann-Kendall approaches. Across timescales, extreme severe occurred 1982/84 1983/84 with -2 ≤ Sd < -1.5. On an scale, results from SDI further showed that 7th 8th decades (1971−1990) recorded more varying degrees ranging mild to both than other decades. The last (7th 8th) revealed most extended duration 1974/75 1988/89 for Baro 1979/80 Lokoja. highest severity was -15.56 -14.26 prolonged their associated yearly intensities suggests proactive measures are needed ameliorate area.
